TIES Takes the “Stress Out of Saving” for Newcomer Families

November 6, 2024

News

How early is too early to start saving for your child’s future?

The Immigrant Education Society (TIES) strongly believes that saving early for your child’s education sets a strong foundation for their future endeavours, ensuring access to quality education and more significant opportunities.

That’s why TIES is once again hosting its free RESP Sign-up Event on November 20, 2024, connecting families with a variety of financial experts.

“Securing a quality education for their children is a shared aspiration for immigrant parents,” Noha Tanahi, Acting Manager of Settlement Services at TIES said.

“However, navigating the complexities of education savings, especially for newcomers, can be daunting due to misconceptions and a lack of information.”

TIES's RESP event will offer accurate guidance and provide a platform for parents to engage with financial institutions, empowering them to make informed decisions.

While the event’s focus is RESPs, TIES also encourages clients to open TFSAs and learn about various registered funds or government grants to boost their savings.

On hand to help them will be partners from all major banks, SERVUS Credit Union, ATB Financial, Service Canada, and the Canada Revenue Agency.

ENMAX will also have a booth to offer insights on saving utilities, and AIMGA will provide information on vaccines.

Services Canada will issue Social Insurance Number (SIN) for families who don't have it right away.

History of event:

TIES launched this initiative in 2012, aligning it with November, which is recognized as the Financial Literacy Month.

The response has been phenomenal. The last physical event welcomed 200 attendees, with approximately 50 families engaging with RESP information and opportunities.

Approximately 300 clients also participated in virtual events held during the pandemic.
