TIES Celebrates 35 Years of Helping Immigrants and Low-income Canadians

August 9, 2024

News

The Immigrant Educational Society (TIES) will host an anniversary gala, Stronger Together, on October 26, 2023 to celebrate its 35 years of service for immigrants and low-income Canadians.

This event commemorates TIES's remarkable journey and growth from a small, volunteer-led initiative in 1988 to a staff of over 170 people and 200 volunteers today. TIES offers a wide range of support for newcomers, including language, employment, entrepreneurship, mental health, child care, financial literacy education, and settlement services. With three facilities in Calgary and a robust e-learning portal, TIES has supported over 300,000 newcomers from 88 different nationalities since its inception.

TIES 35th Anniversary Gala promises an evening of inspiration, diversity, and community spirit. The event will feature speeches from government leaders, multicultural entertainment, a silent auction, and a live art and fashion show. Manjit K. Minhas, renowned entrepreneur and dragon from the CBC Dragons' Den, will deliver the keynote speech.

"Our gala theme, Stronger Together, captures the essence of our collective efforts to empower newcomers and enrich our communities," said Dr. Sally Zhao, President and CEO of TIES. "Our goal is to provide as much help to as many newcomers as possible. By collaborating and supporting one another, we are more likely to achieve this goal."

This milestone event will take place at the Best Western Premier Calgary Plaza Hotel and Conference Centre, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm on October 26, 2023. Doors open at 5:00 pm. Proceeds from this event will be used to support much-needed language, employment and settlement programs for newcomers.

TIES gratefully acknowledges the gala's primary sponsors: RBC and Corus Entertainment (Global Calgary, QR Calgary and Country 105).
